FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
...........Included in the exhibition is
Chris Ware's "Rusty Brown - Pop Art," 2000, that recalls the
roots of Pop Art within the pulp medium of comics. Marilyn Minter's
silkscreen on aluminum "Hands Dumping," 1989, repackages the
messiness of creative work within a clean flat rendering in nostalgic
colors. An artist who reconfigures the masterworks of his predecessors,
Rafael Ferrer's "All the Time Everywhere," ...........Also included in the exhibition is John Clem Clarke's painting "Chardin: Still Life with Plums," 1970, a photo-realist reworking of Chardin's masterpiece currently at the Frick Museum. William Powhida's text drawing "Comments," 2009, is an autobiographical remark on the current art world and it's career reward system. Simon Linke's paintings elevate Artforum ads to the status of art by building a painterly surface of impasto over them. Andrew Grassie's "ICA - Surfacing: Contemporary Drawing," 1998, draws back to consider the rarified context in which art is presented. Tom Burckhardt's "Sculpture Stand," 2005, recreates the tool of freshman sculpture class in cardboard. Duncan Hannah's painting "After Balthus," 2011, recreates a Balthus pose with contemporary directness while Amer Kobaslija's "Northern Light I," 2010, takes a bird's eye view of Balthus' studio. George Deem's "Woman with Water Pitcher," 2002, substitutes a single corner of the Vermeer masterpiece for the whole, suggesting that every detail of the original artwork contains its essential character and the fragmentary nature of the modern work of art. Mark Kostabi's "Suicide by Modernism," 2011 speaks about the frustration of trying to be original in the face of art history- we see an abject artist hanging himself on a Calder Mobile dangling with art icons.
