Adam Baumgold Gallery presents an exhibition by András Böröcz of new carved pencil sculpture boxes, as well as a series of 24 pen and ink drawings “Home Sweet Home,” from October 18 through November 25, 2006. András Böröcz’s works reveal a personal iconography (the domino, cactus, chimney, barrel, and the outhouse, etc.), that appears repeatedly as he traverses his themes, whether in drawings or in the life of the pencil man, where human conditions are coded. His unique expression becomes a collective experience through his revealing humor and his choice of material. Böröcz started to work with pencils more than 16 years ago. His earlier works ranged from carved tiny figures from a single pencil to carved life-size plant-like forms consisting of thousands of glued together pencils. The pencil has become his signature material. In this exhibition, the pencil appears again, used as the art material - both conceptually and structurally. Within boxes constructed of pencils, he creates a figurative tableau also made of pencils, with pencil drawings seen through a large window or hanging on the walls. The small and detailed pencil drawings are meticulously done with a magnifying lens, as are the faces of the carved figures. The artist’s 'task', in a sense, is to create a pencil universe. In this latest series, cactuses with graphite thorns appear for the first time along with characters of varying sizes that have domino torsos. The delicate pencil figures suddenly become monumental in contrast to the even more miniature ones, with his bizarre play of scale. The series of 24 drawings, “Home Sweet Home” continues to develop Borocz’s post-Pop iconography in gallows-humored cartoons. In these drawings, he has virtually created ‘An Outhouse World”, where outhouse figures cavort and live anthropomorphic lives of humor and absurdity. The narratives are both autobiographical and cliché. András Böröcz was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1956. His work has been exhibited extensively in Europe and the US. Recent museum solo exhibitions have taken place at the Vasarely Museum and Jewish Museum both in Hungary. His artwork is in numerous collections such as the National Gallery, Budapest, the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, The Jewish Museum, New York City, Jewish Museum, Budapest, New York City College Collection, Contemporary Museum, Pécs, Hungary, and Yale University, among others. This is Böröcz’s seventh solo exhibition at Adam Baumgold Fine Art. He currently lives and works in New York City. The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00-5:30 P.M.
