Adam Baumgold Gallery presents the exhibition “Text Messages” from June 14 through August 15. The exhibition will include paintings, drawings and sculpture by 34 artists for whom words or text is a significant element in their work. The artists included in “Text Messages” are: Ed Ruscha, Robin Tewes, Saul Steinberg, Adam Dant, Chris Ware, Alexandra Grant, Joe Brainard, Lawrence Weiner, Scott Teplin, Marc Bell, Annabel Daou, Jacob El Hanani, Vivienne Koorland, Jules Feiffer, Martin Wilner, Jane Laudi, Aline Kominsky Crumb, Jules De Balincourt, Robert Crumb, Joe Amrhein, Lee Etheredge IV, Bette Blank, Daniel Johnston, James Castle, Felipe Jesus Consalvos, Robbin Ami Silverberg, Adriane Herman, Anthony Campuzano, Alice Attie, Jenny Holzer, Ben Vautier, Arman and Alyssa Pheobus.

Some works included in the exhibition are Saul Steinberg’s “Declaration of Independence,” 1959, a drawing depicting Steinberg’s emblematic “fake” calligraphic style that approximates the words and letters of the famous document; Ed Ruscha’s “’OH’ in the Picture,” 2005 has the enigmatic word “OH” nestled within an abstracted landscape; Jenny Holzer’s solemn gold-lettered bronze plaque from the Survival Series, 1986 delivers her text message with a deadpan irony; Lee Etheredge IV’s rhythmic geometric patterns of letters formed by a typewriter; Adam Dant’s faux book jacket “Boite Subliminal,” 2003, and free associative compositions of words in “Sex” are executed in a variety of hand-drawn typefaces; Alice Attie’s obsessive, microscopic drawing style is evident in “Constellation,” 2007; Joe Amrhein’s sign-like painting "And Media”, 2003 on mylar subtly reveals a dense phrase from Artforum magazine; Alexandra Grant’s mixed media “Fragments,” 2006 show texts in a cursive style as if seen in a mirror; and Scott Teplin’s pen and ink “Not Too Cute,” 2007 has words and images integrated with a witty, seamless authority.
